What it does

PlanetScale operates managed relational databases for application teams, with distinct PostgreSQL and Vitess-based MySQL offerings and a sharded PostgreSQL option called Neki. Its platform combines database hosting with operational controls for availability, performance and development environments.

  • Choose the database engine for your workload. PlanetScale offers PostgreSQL alongside MySQL through Vitess, and describes Neki for sharded PostgreSQL. These are different products with different operational capabilities, so engine compatibility and query behavior should be evaluated before selecting a tier or migration path.
  • Separate development from production. Database branching provides isolated environments for testing changes and application work. The official PostgreSQL documentation describes dedicated clusters for branches, which makes isolation useful but also means a branch has its own resource and cost implications rather than being a free copy.
  • Use managed availability and recovery tools. The platform describes replicas, backups and failover mechanisms for production workloads, including multi-zone high availability configurations. The chosen engine and tier determine the topology and guarantees, so teams should test recovery and connection behavior against the actual deployment they purchase.
  • Tune capacity and storage. Compute and storage configurations, including NVMe-backed Metal options, give teams choices for different performance needs. Read replicas can serve appropriate read workloads. Compare representative queries and growth estimates rather than assuming a vendor benchmark transfers directly to your application's data and traffic.
  • Manage database changes and connections. PlanetScale provides operational tooling for schema work and upgrades, with capabilities differing by engine. Its PostgreSQL offering includes connection pooling with PgBouncer, helping applications manage connection pressure while still requiring attention to pooling modes, transaction behavior and client configuration.
  • Plan scaling and deployment control. Sharding options address workloads that outgrow a single database machine, while PlanetScale Managed describes a bring-your-own-cloud arrangement. Database Traffic Control adds query-budget controls for load management; these options should be assessed alongside migration complexity, access requirements and the selected cloud environment.

Check before you buyCompare features by engine and plan. Dedicated branches, replicas, compute and storage affect the bill; sharding and pooling can change application behavior. No current public startup credit entitlement was verified.
